Barabbas, a figure mentioned in all four New Testament Gospels, was a Jewish insurrectionist and murderer imprisoned by the Roman authorities in Jerusalem. He is most famous for being chosen by the crowd, over Jesus of Nazareth, to be released by Pontius Pilate as part of a Passover custom.
